In short
CETA, provisionally applied since 21 September 2017, removed customs duties on the vast majority of tariff lines between the EU and Canada. To benefit, goods must meet CETA rules of origin and the exporter must make an origin statement.
Tariffs
Most industrial goods traded between the EU and Canada now enter duty-free under CETA. Check your product's tariff classification (HS code) to confirm the rate that applies.
Rules of origin
Preferential duty applies only to goods that qualify as originating in the EU under CETA's product-specific rules. Exporters make an origin statement on the invoice or other commercial document; for consignments above a set value, the exporter needs to be registered in the EU's REX system.
Public procurement and services
CETA opened parts of Canadian public procurement, including at provincial and municipal level, to EU suppliers above certain thresholds. This matters for building products and infrastructure-related technology.
What CETA does not do
- It does not replace Canadian product certification or building-code acceptance.
- It does not find customers or distributors for you.
- It does not remove provincial differences in regulation.
Frequently asked
- Are EU goods duty-free in Canada?
- Most originating industrial goods are, under CETA, provided they meet rules of origin and carry a valid origin statement.
